Chart of the week: World GDP from 1-2008 A.D.

I love this chart, via Mark Perry.

The West was nothin’ in 1000, and not much better at the time of the Reformation 500 years later, though the trend lines were starting to move in its favor. Hardly anything shows the miracle that is and was America quite like this chart. Pretty amazing.

And, of course, the trend lines for the West aren’t looking so hot right now…but we already knew that.

Another interesting thing about the chart: the U.K. and Germany are nearly identical from the turn of the 20th century, through WWII, and then the war’s aftermath. But then Germany edges out our Anglo compatriots pretty noticeably.
