Clues from the past: New study on the midwest as an aspirational region

My new study with Joel Kotkin and Mark Schill is out. It’s called Clues from the Past, and it’s got some great original data displayed graphically in it for those of you – like me – who enjoy narratives that have pictures. I’ll write more about it soon, but the main takeaway is that the midwest is growing in areas that have figured out how to capitalize on their manufacturing past in a way that works in tandem with their knowledge sectors.

What’s interesting is that places most coastal elites couldn’t find on a map (take the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City corridor, for instance) are poised to pull population and capital away from coastal and other better-known places.

More to come.
